Spain midfielder Gavi has appealed to FIFA not to impose additional sanctions on Leandro Paredes and other Argentina players involved in a confrontation after the 2026 FIFA World Cup final.
Spain defeated Argentina 1 0 on Sunday in New Jersey to lift the World Cup trophy.
Tensions flared immediately after the final whistle as players from both teams became involved in a heated altercation.
Nahuel Molina was reported to have struck Rodri, while Leandro Paredes clashed with Gavi and Eric Garcia.
Another confrontation also took place between Nicolas Otamendi and Rodri.
Reacting to the incident from his hometown in Spain, Gavi urged football’s governing body to consider the matter resolved.
“I don’t think they should be suspended… I understand that this doesn’t present a good image for the kids, but football has always had a more aggressive and intense side.
“For me, it made sense for them to be punished with a red card to Enzo during the match and for the matter to end there. I see that everything that happened is part of football.”
