The Macedonian Call Cancer Foundation, in partnership with Bende Local Government Area of Abia State, has unveiled activities for its August 2026 Cancer Awareness Outreach and Walk, aimed at promoting early detection, education and cancer prevention across communities in Bende.
The campaign, themed “Know the Signs, Take Action, Save Lives,” will commence on Monday, August 17, 2026, with a Cancer Unity Walk scheduled for 7:30 a.m., followed by an official flag-off and symposium at 10:00 a.m. at the Multipurpose Hall, Bende Local Government Headquarters.
The event will have the Wife of the Governor of Abia State, Her Excellency Mrs. Priscilla Otti, as the Special Guest of Honour, while the Mayor of Bende LGA, Hon. Uwabunkonye Bassey, is expected to host participants.
The Foundation’s Lead Convener, Sct. Nneoma Annette Elekwachi-Uche, alongside other health professionals including Dr. Eunice Uzuma Ojike, Dr. Mercy U. Igwe, Mrs. Josephine Ngozi Emenike-Okorie, Dr. Mrs. Ugoama Orike-Wright, and the Bende Local Government Health Authority Secretary, Chief Mrs. Iheadigbo G. Oluchi, will lead the awareness campaign.
According to the programme, the outreach will continue in different communities across the local government area:
* Tuesday, August 18: Ugwueke Women Outreach at the Royal Cross Hospital/Methodist Hospital, Ndi Elu Ugwueke.
* Wednesday, August 19: Alayi Women Outreach at Alayi Health Centre/Court, Alayi.
* Thursday, August 20: Uzuakoli Women Outreach at Uzuakoli Health Centre.
* Friday, August 21: Itumbauzo Women Outreach at Itumbauzo Health Centre.
There will also be free ultrasound breast screening and cervical screening.
The organisers said the initiative is designed to educate residents on cancer prevention, encourage early screening and diagnosis, and improve access to healthcare information, particularly for women in rural communities.
The Foundation called on residents of Bende and neighbouring communities to actively participate in the awareness walk and outreach programmes, emphasizing that early detection remains one of the most effective ways to improve cancer treatment outcomes and save lives.
