Vice presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, Rabi’u Kwankwaso, has condemned comments attributed to Islamic cleric Sheikh Sani Yahaya Jingir regarding the Muslim Muslim ticket and Christians.
Kwankwaso expressed concern over the remarks, warning that statements capable of promoting religious division and disunity should be discouraged, particularly at a critical period in Nigeria’s history.
Jingir had reportedly stated in a video circulating on social media that Nigerians who rejected a Muslim Muslim ticket should leave the country because Nigeria belongs to Muslims. He also referred to Christians as “infidels.”
Reacting in a statement shared on his verified Facebook page on Monday, Kwankwaso said he was particularly concerned that such comments came from a religious leader with Jingir’s influence.
The former Kano State governor stressed that both political and religious leaders have a responsibility to promote unity, truth and reconciliation.
“I am deeply concerned by the comments made by Sheikh Sani Yahaya Jingir at an event in Kano this weekend.
“Let it be clearly stated: the good people of Kano do not endorse or support these divisive remarks.
“We must not lend our voices to utterances capable of undermining the very foundation of our nationhood.
“The 2027 general elections will be an opportunity for Nigerians to reward good governance with resounding support and to reject poor performance at the polls.
“This administration has earned the latter. God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” he said.
Kwankwaso’s comments come amid growing political and religious debates ahead of the 2027 general election, with parties and political figures increasingly addressing issues surrounding religious balance and national unity.
