Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has announced plans to establish an independent commission of inquiry immediately after the August 15, 2026 governorship election to investigate reported killings and other acts of violence associated with the electoral process.
The governor disclosed this on Friday while speaking with journalists in Osogbo, the Osun State capital.
Adeleke expressed sympathy for families who lost loved ones to election related violence, stressing that political differences should never lead to the loss of lives.
He said the proposed commission would investigate the circumstances surrounding the reported killings and make recommendations to ensure that those responsible are held accountable, regardless of their political affiliation or position.
According to the governor, the commission will be constituted on Monday, immediately after the election.
“The Osun State Government expresses its deepest condolences to the families of all persons who have tragically lost their lives in incidents of violence during this election period.
“Every life lost is an Osun life. Politics should never cost anyone his or her life, irrespective of political affiliation,” Adeleke declared.
The governor also pledged that his administration would put in place a framework to support and compensate families who lost relatives during the violence.
He added that the victims would be appropriately honoured, while calling on residents to look beyond the election and work towards preserving peace, unity and stability across Osun State.
