ABUJA, Nigeria — August 31, 2026: Former Minister and founding member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Timipre Sylva, has announced his resignation from the ruling party, citing what he described as a departure from the ideals and principles upon which the party was founded.
In a resignation letter dated August 31, 2026, and addressed to the APC Chairman in Ward 4, Brass Local Government Area of Bayelsa State, Sylva said his decision followed extensive consultations with his family, associates, colleagues and sympathisers.
“I wish to formally tender my resignation from the All Progressives Congress (APC), with immediate effect,” the letter stated.
Sylva, who described himself as a founding member of the APC, expressed disappointment over what he said was the erosion of the values and ideals that motivated Nigerians to build the party.
He stated that he could no longer, “in all good conscience,” remain in a party whose leadership allegedly operates on the belief that “all is fair in politics.”
According to the letter, Sylva also criticised the current administration, saying the government formed under the APC had disappointed many Nigerians and that he saw neither a credible effort nor the possibility of a meaningful reform.
He described the APC as a “floundering ship” and expressed confidence that Nigerians would make their choices in the coming election.
Sylva further revealed that he copied the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in the letter, alleging that the anti-graft agency had recently acted more like an organ of the APC than an independent institution of the state.
He acknowledged that his decision could expose him and his associates to further pressure, stating that it was a risk he was willing to take.
The letter concluded with the words:
“Long live the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”
