The Sultan of Sokoto and President General of the Nigeria Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, has reaffirmed his commitment to maintaining neutrality while providing a fatherly role to politicians seeking elective offices ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The monarch made this known on Monday, September 28, while receiving the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, and his running mate, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, at his palace in Sokoto.
Obi and Kwankwaso were accompanied by the party’s Sokoto State governorship candidate, Dr Shamsu Haido, and other party members.
The visit formed part of the NDC delegation’s political consultations with traditional and community leaders ahead of the 2027 elections.
It came two weeks after the All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential Campaign Council, led by its Director General, Senator Abdul Aziz Abubakar Yari, visited the Sultan on September 14, 2026.
The APC delegation included Sokoto State Governor Ahmed Aliyu, his counterparts from Kebbi and Zamfara states, and other members of the campaign council.
A statement issued by Prince Bashir Adefaka on behalf of the Sultan’s Media Team explained that the monarch remained committed to receiving political aspirants from different parties without favouritism.
“In continuation of his commitment to providing himself as a father figure to all Nigerians aspiring to political offices in 2027 without favouritism, the Sultan of Sokoto and President-General of the Nigeria Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, on Monday, September 28, 2026, received the presidential candidate and vice-presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi and Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, respectively, in his palace in Sokoto City, Sokoto State.”
The Sultan also urged politicians to conduct their campaigns peacefully and avoid inflammatory statements capable of creating tension ahead of the elections.
