The Indigenous People of Biafra, or IPOB, are led by Nnamdi Kanu. The Apex Igbo sociocultural organization, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has expressed hope that Kanu will be released from prison “very soon.”
Dr. Alex Ogbonnia, the national spokesperson for Ohanaeze, made the statement in response to the Abuja Federal High Court’s decision to refuse Kanu bail.
Remember that on Tuesday, IPOB leader Kanu’s bail request was denied by Justice Binta Nyako, who also mandated an expedited trial for the seven-count indictment against him brought by the Federal Government.
Kanu’s trial was also postponed by the judge to April 17, 2024.
In response, Ogbonnia asked the IPOB leader’s followers to have patience and abstain from any actions that would result in the loss of life or property.
An Ohanaeze spokesman’s statement says: “Today, Tuesday, March 19th, 2024, the Federal High Court Abuja deliberated on the case of our Son and Brother Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.
“Nigerian youths expected that he would be granted bail after spending several months in incarceration. This case has been adjourned until 17 April 2024.
“I wish to appeal to all Nigerian Youths to exercise some patience and avoid any act that would lead to the destruction of life and property. Mazi Nnamdi Kanu has made it very clear on many occasions that he will not support any act of arson or bloodshed.
“We trust in the divine providence of Almighty God, and by God’s grace, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu will be free from incarceration very soon. I appeal to everyone to be patient.”
