The Management of Abia State University, Uturu (ABSU) has expressed concern over the commencement of an indefinite strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities, Abia State University Branch (ASUU-ABSU), urging the union to return to the negotiation table.

The University’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ndukwe J. Okeudo, made the appeal in a statement issued on behalf of the University Management on Wednesday, August 12, 2026.

The statement noted that the strike commenced despite ongoing engagements involving the University Management, the Abia State Government, and other relevant governing authorities aimed at addressing the demands of the union.

Management acknowledged that some of the issues raised by ASUU-ABSU predate the current administration, while expressing optimism that the outstanding matters can be resolved through continued dialogue.

The University appealed to the union to suspend the industrial action and return to negotiations, stressing that constructive engagement remains the best pathway towards achieving enduring and mutually beneficial solutions.

“Management remains optimistic that the issues raised by ASUU-ABSU will be resolved speedily and amicably,” the statement said.

The University Management also appealed to students to remain calm and await further directives as discussions with the staff unions continue.

According to the statement, Management remains committed to maintaining a harmonious relationship with ASUU-ABSU and other staff unions in order to sustain a peaceful industrial environment and protect the University’s academic mission.

The statement was signed by Chijioke Nwogu, Deputy Registrar/PRO, Media and Public Relations Unit, Abia State University, Uturu.
