There have been further details revealed on the 16 soldiers that were killed by some supposed young people in Okuama community, Ughelli South Local Government Area, Delta State.
The soldiers in Okuama were allegedly fighting for Niger Delta warlord Tompolo, not for peace, according to the most recent revelation made by one of the young people who is believed to have been in the military.
The teenager, who would not give his name, stated in a widely shared video on the internet: “Okuama and Okoloba have land issues but Ijaw people whom the federal government have given power to go after bunkery are using the Army to guide their products to the point of sales. They used the Army to pick people from Okuama community.
“The three people taken were slaughtered, and now they are coming back to pick community leaders and you know that once community leaders are captured; the youths are powerless.
“Those soldiers were not in Okuama for peacekeeping, they were fighting in favour of Tompolo who ordered them to do so.”
The 181 Amphibious Battalion troops were on a peaceful and mediatory mission, according to the Nigerian Army, following an alleged communal dispute between the Okuama and Okoloba villages in Ughelli South and Bomadi Local Government Areas of Delta State.
An armed teenage gang from the town was reported to have attacked and killed the troops in cold blood in the most heinous way.
The tragedy claimed the lives of twelve soldiers, a civilian, two Majors, a Captain, and a Commanding Officer.
