As the local government elections approach, a group of youths in Ohafia local government have declared their unyielding support for Chief Sunday Kalu Onuka, challenging other aspirants to demonstrate tangible accomplishments rather than resort to financial inducements and empty promises.
During a courtesy visit to Chief Onuka at his country home in Elu, held in celebration of the New Yam Festival, the youths, led by Emeka, praised Onuka for his unwavering dedication to the community.
According to Emeka Awa, one of the youths from Ohafor ward who resides in Elu Ohafia, Chief Onuka has consistently shown his commitment to the grassroots, particularly the youths through various empowerment initiatives which includes, payment of school fees for indigent students, payment of skill-training fees and provision of equipment for graduating trainees. He added that Onuka’s presence in the grassroots has not been seasonal but year-round.
Speaking on behalf of the group, Onwuka, from Isiama Ward emphasized that the youths of Ohafia are no longer swayed by monetary enticements or other forms of electoral bribery. He stressed that they are focused on electing leaders who have a proven track record of working for the betterment of the community. “Chief Onuka has been on the ground, supporting us through thick and thin. He is not one to appear only when elections are near. We challenge other aspirants to show their work,” he stated.
The New Yam Festival visit highlighted the cultural significance of the event, but it also served as a platform for the youths to make their political stance clear. They believe that leadership should be earned through dedication to the people, not through short-term incentives aimed at securing votes.
Chief Onuka, in response, thanked the youths for their unwavering support and pledged to continue his work in Ohafia, focusing on youth empowerment and community development. His longstanding relationship with the people, especially the younger generation, was a focal point of the day’s discussions, further solidifying his position as a preferred candidate in the upcoming elections.
As the local government polls draw near, this endorsement from the Ohafia youth signals a clear shift in political dynamics, where actions and integrity take precedence over fleeting electioneering tactics.
