… Promises to Synchronise Other Laws with Democratic Realities
In its efforts to pull Rivers State from the nadir of Legislative anachronism and place it on the pedestal of Legislative contemporaneity, the State House of Assembly at its 71st Legislative Sitting, on Wednesday, passed the Rivers State Commissions of Inquiry Bill, 2024; which is a Bill for a law to repeal the Rivers State Commissions of Inquiry Law, Cap 30, Laws of Rivers State, 1999, and to re-enact the Rivers State Commissions of Inquiry Law for the holding of Commissions of Inquiry and for other matters connected thereto.
Debating on the Report of the Committee presented by Hon. Sylvanus Nwankwo, Members lauded the Committee for a job well done, stressing that the response of members of the public to the Public Hearing speaks volumes on the acceptability of the Bill, and urged the House to pass the Bill into law.
Commenting, the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Martin Chike Amaewhule, commended the Committee and honourable Members for their robust debate on the Report of the Committee and the Bill.
The Speaker maintained that as a progressive Assembly, the House will continue to amend or repeal and re-enact obsolete and anachronistic laws that no longer serve the interest of Rivers people. Rt. Hon. Amaewhule expressed the hope that given the progressive import of the Bill, when passed and assented to will further deepen the doctrine of separation of power.
Before passing the Bill into law, the House In line with Legislative practice and rules of the House, resolved into Committee of the Whole and gave the Bill clause by clause consideration.
