Former presidential aide, Bashir Ahmad, has claimed that efforts are underway by certain political figures to persuade former President Goodluck Jonathan to contest the 2027 presidential election.
Ahmad made this known via a post on his official X handle on Monday, stating that Jonathan is being positioned as a strategic candidate who could appeal to voters in Northern Nigeria.
According to Ahmad, the push for Jonathan’s return is based on the perception that his candidacy would be “easy to market” in the North, particularly with the narrative that he would serve only one term if elected.
“From all indications, there are ongoing subtle moves by certain political elements trying to convince former President Goodluck Jonathan to contest again in 2027,” Ahmad wrote.
“They calculate that his candidacy will be easy to market in the North under the guise that he would only serve a single term.
“But the troubling part is that this push is not rooted in what he would offer the North or the country at large, but merely in political convenience and power rotation. The North deserves more than being used as a political ladder.”
Political observers have speculated that Jonathan remains one of the few Southern politicians with the potential to challenge President Bola Tinubu in a national election. His previous experience, widespread name recognition, and perceived acceptability in parts of the North are considered key assets that could shape the political landscape ahead of 2027.
