Illya Umar Damagum, the acting national chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has stated that his stance is not life-or-death.

Following the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) vote of confidence in him, Damagun revealed this to reporters in Abuja.

The vote of confidence in Damagum was approved by the PDP’s NWC on Tuesday at the party’s National Secretariat during the 584th meeting.

The PDP’s efforts to stabilize and relaunch itself as Nigeria’s primary opposition party were praised by the NWC for Damagun’s commitment and hard work.

The National Vice Chairman (South East), Chief Ali Odefa, proposed the motion for a vote of confidence in the acting national chairman, and Yayari Mohammed, the national treasurer, seconded it. The motion was made by Taofeek Arapaja, the Deputy National Chairman (South).

He said that a change in leadership would not cause him to lose his position in the PDP, but he still claimed he did not see the battle to stay in government to be very important.

“This is not a matter of life and death. I am still an elected member of this NEC. Even if I revert to deputy national chairman, I’m still a member of NWC. The issue of surviving or not does not emerge,” he said.

Amidst the preparations for the 2023 presidential contest, Damagum took over as PDP National Chairman.

This came after the NWC removed his predecessor, Iyorchia Ayu.
