Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara has rejected recent media narratives portraying the state as unsafe, insisting such reports are inaccurate and driven by political motives.

Speaking on Sunday night at an Amateur Golf Championship in Port Harcourt, he pointed to the large turnout of participants and guests from across Africa as evidence that the state remains peaceful and welcoming.

Fubara acknowledged that Rivers experienced about six months of political tension but said the situation had since normalised. According to him, “more than half of the things you read in the media are not true,” adding that some actors amplify issues in the state to create a negative impression.

He said his administration is focused on improving the state’s image, protecting residents, and reaffirming that Rivers remains safe.

The governor commended security agencies for their coordinated work in restoring and maintaining calm, which has allowed government activities to resume fully.

He reiterated his support for sports development, announcing plans to revive the Governor’s Cup and promising additional assistance to upgrade golf facilities to boost both national and international participation.

Major General Emmanuel Eric Emekah, General Officer Commanding 6 Division of the Nigerian Army, said the relative peace in Rivers influenced the decision to host the tournament in Port Harcourt, adding that the successful event validated that choice.

Organisers reported that golfers from eight African nations and representatives of 36 golf clubs across Nigeria took part in the championship.
