Manchester City manager, Pep Guardiola, has reacted to Chelsea’s decision to sack head coach Enzo Maresca, describing the Italian as an outstanding manager and individual.
Chelsea confirmed on Thursday that Maresca had been relieved of his duties less than six months after guiding the club to victory in the FIFA Club World Cup and the UEFA Conference League.
Despite a promising start to the Premier League season, Chelsea struggled in December, managing only six points from six matches and falling 15 points behind league leaders Arsenal. Reports also suggested a deterioration in the working relationship between Maresca and the club’s hierarchy at Stamford Bridge.
Speaking ahead of Manchester City’s Premier League clash with Chelsea this weekend, Guardiola expressed disappointment over the decision.
“Let me say this, Chelsea from my point of view have lost an incredible, incredible manager and an incredible person,” Guardiola said.
“But it’s a decision from the hierarchy of Chelsea, so there is nothing more to add.”
Maresca’s dismissal adds to Chelsea’s recent history of frequent managerial changes, a trend that has continued to draw criticism across the football community.
