Chelsea have opened discussions with Aston Villa over a potential move for goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez as they look to strengthen their goalkeeping options before the transfer window closes.
The Argentine is reportedly keen on the move, with his future at Villa becoming uncertain following the club’s recent recruitment in the position.
Martinez had previously been in talks with Juventus, but the proposed deal collapsed after the Italian side opted to sign Tottenham goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario.
Villa have since brought in Zion Suzuki from Parma, with the Japan international expected to compete for the starting role under manager Unai Emery.
Martinez was left out of Villa’s squad for their Premier League opener against Brighton on Sunday. According to The Athletic, discussions are now underway between Chelsea and the goalkeeper regarding a possible move to Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea began the new season with Robert Sanchez in goal against Fulham, but the Spaniard was at fault for both goals conceded during their 3-2 victory at Craven Cottage.
The Blues had previously been linked with Martinez earlier in the transfer window but initially appeared satisfied with Sanchez and young goalkeeper Mike Penders.
However, Xabi Alonso’s side have now reportedly reopened talks with Martinez’s representatives ahead of the September 1 transfer deadline.
Martinez began his Premier League career at Arsenal before moving to Aston Villa in 2020 in search of regular first team football.
The 33 year old has made 256 appearances for Villa and won the Premier League Golden Glove in 2022. He also played a key role in Argentina’s 2022 World Cup triumph in Qatar.
If Martinez leaves Villa, he would become one of several experienced players to depart Emery’s squad this summer, following the exits of Morgan Rogers, Youri Tielemans, Ezri Konsa and Lucas Digne.
For Chelsea, Martinez would represent another experienced Premier League addition after the arrivals of Jordan Henderson and Danny Welbeck this summer.
