A Professor of Communications at Baze University, Abiodun Adeniyi, has explained why elections in Nigeria are frequently disputed, attributing the problem to a lack of transparency.

Speaking on Prime Time on Arise Television on Friday, Adeniyi said elections have become the weak point of Nigeria’s democracy, stressing that credible polls are essential for democratic growth.

According to him, while Nigeria often celebrates the longevity of its democratic system, the conduct of elections continues to erode public trust.

“The bane of our democracy is election and electioneering. Elections are always contested and disputed because there is no transparency. We often find it difficult to conduct free, fair, credible and transparent elections,” he said.

Adeniyi noted that strengthening democracy requires collective effort and a commitment to openness, accountability, and credibility in the electoral process.

He emphasized that greater use of technology could help restore confidence and integrity in elections.

“To grow and consolidate democracy, we must do everything possible to make elections open, transparent and credible. One major way is by ramping up the use of technology,” he added.

He also described recent communications from the Senate on electoral matters as troubling, saying mixed signals and unclear messaging had further fueled public concern and confusion.
