The Nenadi Usman led faction of the Labour Party has announced that its presidential ticket for the 2027 general elections has been zoned to the southern region of Nigeria.
Usman made the declaration on Tuesday in Abuja, stating that the party has taken a firm position on the matter.
“We have taken a firm decision: we will not field any aspirant from northern Nigeria.
“The position has been zoned to southern Nigeria. So, if any northerner now seeks to contest, we certainly will not accept it,” she said.
The development comes as the party intensifies preparations for the 2027 elections.
The National Executive Council, NEC, of the Labour Party had earlier approved the timetable for its primary elections.
According to the schedule, submission of the membership register to the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, is set for April 15, 2026. Primaries for governorship, Senate, House of Representatives, and House of Assembly positions will hold on May 15, 2026, while the presidential primary election is slated for May 23, 2026.
