A chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Kenneth Okonkwo, has alleged that the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) is politically aligned with President Bola Tinubu, claiming the party was created to advance the interests of the ruling establishment.
Okonkwo made the allegation during an interview on Symfoni TV, where he also claimed that Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 election, Peter Obi, had been lured into what he described as a political trap.
According to the former actor and politician, the circumstances surrounding the registration of the NDC raise questions about its independence and political affiliations.
He alleged that the party’s registration process gained momentum after a meeting involving its national leader, Seriake Dickson, and President Tinubu.
Okonkwo further claimed that the NDC was initially unable to secure registration until a court ruling compelled the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to recognize the party.
He argued that the development ultimately created an avenue through which Peter Obi became associated with the platform.
“NDC is Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress, APC, political party. It’s now that Peter Obi is even more trapped.
“Can’t you see? They were not to be registered until I heard it from the Obidients’ mouths that there was a meeting between Dickson and Tinubu, and then, they registered NDC.
“After the registration, what happened? INEC said they were not qualified to be registered, and they went to court. That’s how it came, by court order.
“A party that has not been existing. Meaning INEC was compelled to register them. Peter Obi said they were invited by NDC. Meaning NDC was registered to lure him, and then he ran with it. Now he has entered their trap,” Okonkwo said.
The remarks add to the growing political debate surrounding emerging alliances and party realignments ahead of the 2027 general election, as opposition figures continue to assess possible platforms and coalitions capable of challenging the ruling party.
