The National Executive Committee (NEC) of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has unveiled a fresh set of resolutions aimed at strengthening the party’s internal structure and deepening institutional governance ahead of future political engagements.
The resolutions were contained in a statement issued by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Osa Director, who said the decisions form part of efforts to advance the institutionalization of the NDC and reinforce the principle of party supremacy.
According to the party, all governments and public office holders elected on its platform will be required to consult the party structure before making major policy decisions, appointments and implementing key programmes, with the exception of personal staff appointments.
The party emphasized that elected officials must operate within the framework of the party’s ideals and collective objectives.
“Programs, policies, and appointments (except personal staff) of all governments elected on the platform of the party must be made in consultation with the party structure,” the statement noted.
The NDC further stressed that the party remains supreme over individual interests and ambitions, urging members to align their personal goals with the broader objectives of the organization.
“Members are expected to align their personal interests and agendas with those of the party,” the statement added.
As part of its reforms, the party directed that all affiliated groups and non governmental organizations associated with the NDC must function under the supervision and authority of the party and not operate independently of its established structure.
The NEC also approved the development of a comprehensive Code of Conduct for party officials and candidates.
To facilitate this process, a committee headed by the National Legal Adviser has been constituted to draft the framework and operational guidelines.
In a move aimed at promoting unity within its ranks, the party announced the inauguration of a National Reconciliation Committee tasked with engaging aggrieved members and resolving internal disputes.
Reaffirming its long term vision, the NDC stated that it is being built as a lasting political institution rather than a platform driven by individuals or short term political interests.
“The NDC is being built as an institution, not a personality cult, political movement, or Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) to be used and discarded,” the statement read.
The party encouraged members to remain committed to its growth and sustainability, describing the NDC as a platform designed to endure for generations.
On accountability and financial management, the NEC pledged to enforce strict transparency in the handling of party resources.
It stated that all party funds must be utilized solely for official party activities and that office holders would be held accountable for the management of such resources.
The party also introduced stringent disclosure requirements for candidates seeking elective positions on its platform.
According to the resolutions, all funds sourced by candidates, as well as contributions made towards campaign activities, must be fully declared to the party at the local government, state, zonal and national levels.
The NEC further directed that campaign finances must be processed through designated party campaign accounts, including governorship and presidential campaign accounts where applicable.
The resolutions underscore the NDC’s efforts to strengthen internal governance, promote accountability and establish a structured framework for party administration ahead of the 2027 general elections.
