Former Super Eagles captain Sunday Oliseh has identified Cape Verde as the most impressive African team at the ongoing 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The island nation is making its debut appearance at the global tournament and has already drawn widespread praise following an impressive performance in its opening match.

Cape Verde held European champions Spain to a goalless draw in their first World Cup game, a result that earned admiration from football fans and pundits.

African teams have delivered several notable performances at the tournament so far. Ghana and Ivory Coast recorded victories over Panama and Ecuador respectively, while Morocco played out a 1 to 1 draw against Brazil. DR Congo also held Portugal to a 1 to 1 draw, while Egypt shared points with Belgium.

However, South Africa, Algeria, Senegal and Tunisia suffered defeats in their opening fixtures.

Speaking on the performances of African teams, Oliseh said Cape Verde stood out above the rest.

“What nation has impressed me the most? For me, I have totally become a Cape Verde fan,” Oliseh said.

“I’m even thinking of buying a ticket to go and visit the country once. Because the way they play, the organisation, this is no joke. This is something that has been worked upon. What I had felt when I went to the AFCON was that they intentionally did not come to the AFCON.”
