Tension has erupted at the Port Harcourt Branch of the Nigerian Bar Association, NBA, ahead of the branch election scheduled to hold today.
The controversy followed allegations by some lawyers that the Electoral Committee failed to comply with the branch’s bye laws by not publishing the voters register before the election.
Lawyers who gathered at the NBA House in Port Harcourt were seen chanting in separate groups, with one faction supporting the conduct of the election while another demanded its suspension over the alleged irregularities.
Security has been strengthened at the venue, with personnel of the Nigeria Police Force and the Department of State Services, DSS, deployed to maintain law and order.
