New Germany head coach Jurgen Klopp has warned the German Football Association, DFB, that he will leave the position immediately if he loses the confidence of the federation or if his family is subjected to unnecessary pressure.
The former Liverpool manager is beginning his first role in international football after enjoying a highly successful coaching career at club level.
Speaking during his official unveiling, Klopp said he has no interest in remaining in the position if he no longer has the backing of the German Football Association. He also stated that he does not intend to take up another coaching role after his time with the national team.
“The day you no longer want me, I will leave without any severance pay. If you declare tomorrow that I am inadequate, I will depart. It cannot be just one individual. It must be a collective sentiment.
“If the DFB decides I am not suitable, I will go. If you act poorly and do not allow my family to have peace, I will leave. Feel free to criticize me if things do not go well. I am willing to address it.
“The focus is on the job. Jürgen Klopp does not have a career beyond the national team. Ideally, this will be the pinnacle of my career,” he said.
Klopp succeeds Julian Nagelsmann as Germany coach after the national team’s disappointing exit at the hands of Paraguay, which saw Die Mannschaft fail to reach the Round of 16 for the third consecutive major tournament.
The German tactician has been out of coaching since leaving Liverpool at the end of the 2023 and 2024 season. During his nine year spell at Anfield, he won multiple major trophies and transformed the club into one of Europe’s dominant sides.
The German Football Association will be hoping Klopp can replicate that success with the national team.
