A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Dan Ulasi, has criticised the decision of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, to publicly support President Bola Tinubu ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Speaking during an interview on ARISE News, Ulasi said Wike was wrong to endorse Tinubu while still occupying a leadership position within the opposition party.
He acknowledged that Wike, like every Nigerian citizen, has the constitutional right to support any candidate of his choice, but argued that making such a declaration as a prominent PDP figure sends a negative message to party members and supporters.
“I did say it was wrong for the FCT minister, being the national leader of the PDP, to prematurely declare four months ago for Tinubu, even though he is serving under his government,” Ulasi said.
The PDP chieftain said Wike could have waited until the election period was closer before announcing his political preference and explaining his reasons for backing the President.
According to him, while Wike cannot be denied the freedom to support Tinubu, doing so as a leader of the PDP is discouraging for party members who are expected to remain committed to strengthening the opposition ahead of future elections.
Ulasi’s comments come amid ongoing debate over Wike’s continued association with the Tinubu administration while maintaining his position as a major figure within the PDP.
