Nigeria’s political, military and traditional leaders on Wednesday converged at the Aguiyi-Ironsi Conference Centre, Finbarrs Road, Umuahia, Abia State, to commemorate the 60th Memorial Anniversary of the late Major General Johnson Thomas Umunnakwe Aguiyi-Ironsi, Nigeria’s first Military Head of State and first indigenous Commander of the Nigerian Army.
The solemn event featured the laying of wreaths at the tomb of the late Head of State in honour of his service and sacrifice to the nation.
In a moving citation delivered by Louisa Aguiyi-Ironsi, the late military leader was remembered as a patriotic statesman, a symbol of national unity, and a pioneer of indigenous military leadership whose life was dedicated to preserving Nigeria’s cohesion during one of its most turbulent periods.
She described the memorial as more than a ceremonial observance, noting that it was an opportunity for Nigerians to reflect on the nation’s history, honour sacrifices made in service to the country, and recommit themselves to peace, justice and national unity.
According to her, Major General Aguiyi-Ironsi’s legacy continues to inspire generations, stressing that true national progress can only be achieved when Nigerians embrace unity over division, reconciliation over resentment, and the collective good above sectional interests.
Louisa further urged citizens to uphold the ideals of integrity, patriotism and selfless service, while also paying tribute to the late Lieutenant Colonel Adekunle Fajuyi, whose loyalty and sacrifice remain enduring symbols of courage and honour.
She said the wreaths laid at the gravesite represented respect for those who paid the ultimate price in the service of Nigeria and reaffirmed the nation’s commitment to peaceful coexistence and national integration.
Speaking during the vote of thanks, Ambassador Tom Aguiyi-Ironsi expressed profound appreciation to all dignitaries, family members and guests who attended the memorial, describing the 60th anniversary as the most remarkable remembrance held in honour of his father.
He particularly commended the Abia State Government for renovating the gravesite and supporting the successful hosting of the event, while expressing optimism that more developmental projects would be undertaken in the years ahead.
Ambassador Aguiyi-Ironsi also urged guests to proceed to the International Conference Centre for the remaining activities, including tributes, discussions and entertainment.
Among dignitaries present were President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, represented by the Minister of Defence, General Christopher Musa; former First Lady Dame Patience Jonathan; Governor Charles Soludo of Anambra State, represented by Chief Law Mefor; Abia State Deputy Governor, Chief Ikechukwu Emetu; Ambassador Tom Aguiyi-Ironsi; the member representing Ikwuano/Umuahia Federal Constituency, Obi Aguocha, represented by Dr Sham Uko; Rt. Hon. Austin Okezie Meregini; Defence C.C. Nwanna; former Minister of State for Mines and Steel Development, Dr Uchechukwu Ogah; Dr Emmanuel Meribole; retired Navy Commander MacDonald Ubah; Abia State Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu; Archbishop Chibuzor Opoko; Chijioke Nwaobia; Rt. Hon. Dennis Okenwa, as well as heads of various federal government agencies and other distinguished guests.
The memorial concluded with renewed calls for national unity, peaceful coexistence and sustained commitment to the ideals of patriotism and selfless service exemplified by the late Major General Johnson Thomas Umunnakwe Aguiyi-Ironsi.
