Akwa Ibom State economy has virtually crashed and the government is now in total comatose. Salaries of some civil servants like Local govt workers and many other overheads have not been paid for over five months. Many municipal duties have since been abandoned

. Refuse heaps mounting everywhere on the roads, fuelling concerns for epidemics; street and traffic lights are not functioning in many areas.

Meantime, the governor, Chief Godswill Akpabio, had sneaked out of the state for over two weeks now. His whereabouts are not known. Sources say that embarrassed and ridiculed for his unprecedented financial recklessness, graft, theft, corruption and wastages which had resulted in the crash of the state economy, the governor is cooling off in a German Hotel with his wife. His albatross is the drastic fall in oil revenue.
For January, the state earned only N 9 billion. With a N7 billion deductions for debt repayments, it was left with only N2 billion which was not enough for salary payment. The governor had to run to the President for a bail out of N2 billion.
Politically, Akpabio is in also in a fix. The turn of events has significantly gnawed at his political ambition. There are speculations that he’s contemplating dropping out of the senatorial race in readiness to flee into exile. While his APC opponent, Inibehe Okori, an urbane Lagos businessman, is criss-crossing the area campaigning, Akpabio is nowhere to be seen. ‘It is as if he is no longer in the race’, says Ekop Joshua, a PDP supporter in Ikot Ekpene.
‘Akpabio is worried by a possible Buhari and Umana Umana win. The spectre of a jail term is a nightmare scenario to him’, reasons Esitima Uko, an APC member from Nsit Attai.
