Defence ministry prepares army for fight against Lassa fever, others

The Ministry of Defence has commenced the training of the personnel of the Armed Forces for effective response to the menace of emerging diseases such as the Lassa fever, Ebola and Zika.

The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Defence, Amb. Danjuma Sheni, said the ministry found it necessary to organise the 7-day training Programne for medical personnel of the Armed forces to strengthen the ongoing intervention against Lassa fever and also Zika virus ravaging Latin America.

Sheni made the comment in an address read on his behalf by the Head of Medical Services, Ministry of Defence, Dr. Oluwatosin Akinlade, at the opening ceremony of the 7-day summit with the theme “Diseases Outbreak Investigation and  Management for the Armed Forces Personnel’ in Abuja on Monday.

He said the crucial training was organised under the ongoing partnership between the Ministry of Defence and the United States Department of Defence Walter Reed Programme-Nigeria, which came into being 11 years ago to curtail the spread of the HIV/AIDS disease in the Armed Forces.
