The Nigerian Navy says it has arrested a fake Naval officer, a
36-year old man, Kenneth Mawama, who falsely assumed the  rank of
Captain in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital.

The executive officer, Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) Pathfinder, Port
Harcourt, Navy Captain Olusegun Soyemi, who disclosed this while
parading the suspect before newsmen, said Mawama is an indigene of Tai
local government area of the state.

Soyemi stated that the suspect had also paraded himself as member of
the Rivers State house of assembly and a medical doctor with intent to
defraud unsuspecting individuals and companies.

He said, “Following intelligence report on Jan. 29, we detailed our
naval intelligence team who tracked, trailed and monitored Mr Kenneth
Mamawa’s movement until eventually he was arrested.

“Mamawa, who hails from Tai LGA in Rivers state, was arrested while
pretending to be an officer of the Nigerian Navy. Mamawa was arrested
impersonating the rank of navy Captain (equivalent to Nigerian Army
Colonel) with intent to deceive and dupe members of the public. The
suspect is a fraudster who specialises in duping and swindling
unsuspecting citizens of their money.”

Soyemi alleged that the suspect had also presented himself to his
victims as a member of the Rivers State house of assembly and a medical
doctor, among other trades and identities.

He said the suspect was known to some security agencies with several
criminal cases pending with the Nigerian Police anti-robbery and
homicide division, and warned those with intent to impersonate or
currently impersonating the Nigerian navy for criminal activities to
desist from such illegal act.
