The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has called off its south west zonal congress scheduled for Saturday.

Wale Oladipo, national secretary of the party, confirmed this to TheCable in a telephone interview on Friday.

He explained that the decision of the party was informed by an order of the federal high court in Lagos, restraining the party from going ahead with the exercise.

“There is a court order…we just received it, stopping us from going ahead with the congress until the case filed by the zonal secretary (Pegba Otemolu) is determined,”he said.

“He (Otemolu) is claiming that they were elected in 2014 for a term of four years, and that their tenure will expire in 2018. He went to the federal high court in Lagos, and he was given an interlocutory injunction restraining the PDP from going ahead with the congress. And also telling INEC not to recognise anything coming out of it.

“So, as a law-abiding party we are calling off the congress for now.”

The PDP national congress is scheduled to take place on May 21 in Port Harcourt, but on Thursday some leaders of the party called for its cancellation, and for the removal of Amodu Sherriff, national chairman of the party.
