Mr. Lawrence Nwurukwu, a former chairman of People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Ebonyi State,  is the National Electoral Commissioner representing the South-East in INEC. He conducted the 2015 governorship election in the zone.

As INEC’s South-East commissioner, Nwurukwu advised the commission to cancel the April 11th, 2015 governorship election in Abia State, on the grounds of irregularity in some areas, despite the clearly margin lead of Governor Ikpeazu of PDP against Alex Otti of APGA.

After cancelling results from some LGAs in the state, INEC declared the April 11 election inconclusive, and Nwurukwu, as the commissioner in charged, also advised INEC to conduct a supplementary election on the April 25th, 2015, in the canceled areas.

After the April 25th election, which concluded the inconclusive April 11th 2015 governorship election, Governor Ikpeazu, having scored the highest number of votes in both elections, was declared winner and returned as governor-elect.

On April 28th, 2015, the day INEC issued Dr Ikpeazu with his Certificate of Return as Abia Governor-elect at the INEC office in Umuahia, Nwurukwu was there in flesh and blood. In fact, it was Nwuruku that issued Rt. Hon. Udo Oko Chukwu his Certificate of Return as Abia Deputy Governor-elect.
