Governor Aregbesola Grants Amnesty To Six Inmates

Osun state’s Governor, Rauf Aregbesola has granted amnesty to six inmates who were serving jail terms in Ilesha prison, Kirikiri maximum prison, Lagos and Ibara, Abeokuta Federal Prison.

The pardon was confirmed in a statement issued by Osun state’s Director of Public Prosecutions and Secretary to the State Advisory Council on Prerogatives of Mercy, Mr. Adedapo Adeniji on Thursday, September 29, 2016 in Oshogbo.

Adeniji disclosed that the governor granted the amnesty to commemorate the 56th Independence Anniversary of Nigeria.

He said: “Pursuant to the advice and recommendations of the State Adivisory Council on prerogative of mercy, Governor Rauf Aregbesola, in exercising his powers under Section 212(1)(a) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended) has graciously granted amnesty to the following inmates”.

The names included: Ayodeji Olatunbosun (Ilesha prison), Afa Mukaila nSalawu, Dayo ilesanmi and Ojo Adeye (Kirikiri maximum prisons, Lagos).

Others included Tunde Adegoke and Sgt. Adam Baruwa (Ibara prison, Abeokuta).

A pardon or clemency is granted in many countries when individuals have demonstrated that they have fulfilled their debt to society, or are otherwise considered to have served a deserving punishment for their crimes.

Clemency plays an important role when capital punishment is applied.
