The House of Representatives said on Monday that lawmakers were awaiting President Muhammadu Buhari’s response to the National Assembly’s invitation to address them on the state of the economy.

The country is “technically in recession,” a development that forced both chambers of the National Assembly to invite the President to explain his plans on how to get the economy fully back on track.

He is expected to address a joint session of the Senate and the House.

Only on Sunday, the Presidency, through its Senior Special Assistant on National Assembly Matters (Senate), Senator Ita Enang, confirmed that Buhari had received the invitation.

However, speaking with The PUNCH in Abuja on Monday, the Chairman, House Committee on Rules/Business, Mr. Orker Jev, said the legislature had played its part by inviting the President.

He explained that the next step was for the President to respond by requesting a date on which he would appear.

Jev added that on the part of the legislature, lawmakers were ready to receive him.

He said, “The resolution was passed and forwarded to the President.

“There has been no reply to the best of my knowledge. He will write us to state when he will come to the National Assembly.

“We are waiting. That will be Mr. President’s decision. We are ever ready to have the President come to speak on the state of the economy.”
