The Independent National Electoral Commission has called on political parties in Rivers State to withdraw court cases against the rerun elections in the state.

The state Resident Electoral Commissioner, Elder Ikoiwak, stated this when a group of Christian professionals and opinion leaders under the aegis of Club 401 visited him to submit a petition to the INEC chairman.

The Port Harcourt-based Club 401 wrote a petition to the INEC Chairman Prof. MahmoodYakubu, through the REC, Ikoiwak on Monday, demanding the immediate conclusion of the pending rerun legislative elections in the state.

Speaking while delivering the letter, the Chairman of the Group, Lawrence Jumbo, said the group was worried that the legislative elections, which the INEC started in March, had not been concluded.

Jumbo lamented that Rivers people had some problems but did not have representatives and senators to address them.

Responding, Ikoiwak stressed that the state office was working with the national office to ensure that a new date was fixed for the remaining elections.

“We are appealing to those who have gone to court on both camps to voluntarily withdraw these cases from the courts to make a good platform for the elections to be conducted,” he said.
