The police in Anambra State have taken over the Peoples Democratic Party’s state secretariat in Awka, rattling members of the party who assembled for a scheduled meeting on Monday.
The party members expressed bitterness over their inability to gain entrance into the secretariat, which has been their meeting point for years.
According to them, the directive to bar them from gaining entry to the secretariat is unlawful.
The legal advisers to the party in the state, Mr Afam Akonanya, said the party members belonging to the Makarfi faction under the state leadership of Ken Emeakayi were embarrassed by the development.
He explained that the police cordoned off the area and refuse to allow them to hold their lawful meeting inside.
He described the action as unlawful because it had no recourse to the Constitution.
The Anambra State Commissioner of Police, Mr Garba Umar, however, said the directive to cordon off the party Secretariat came from the National Secretary of the PDP, Senator Ben Obi.
Umar explained that the police was informed that a faction of the party was planning to take over the secretariat.
He said that other than to secure the place, the police had no other instruction either to hurt anybody or endanger any party members
