…Calls On President To Call Former Governor To Order

Worried by the disturbing developments Akwa Ibom State state ahead of the 2019 general elections, elders and stakeholders of Eket Senatorial district have written President Muhammadu Buhari, appealing to him to call to order those beating war drums in the state.

The open letter, a copy of which was obtained by our reporter, also condemned the recent action of the former governor’s wife, Mrs. Unoma Akpabio wherein she attempted to push aside the First Lady of the state, Mrs. Martha Emmanuel from receiving Aisha Buhari who visited the state recently.

The elders described the former First Lady’s action as an impunity and utmost disregard for the offices of both Nigeria’s First Lady and that of Akwa Ibom State, adding that it was an embarrassing scenario.

They also frowned at the vow by a former governor of the state, Senator Godswill Akpabio, to invade the state the same way Adolf Hitler did to Poland, called on the President to caution the former Senate Minority Leader and his co-travellers against their warlike posturing to avoid a total breakdown of law and order in the state.

“Mr President is hereby invited to urgently call a halt to this return of impunity and reckless indulgence to Akwa Ibom State noting that continuous reign of terror could lead to a breakdown of law and order and the populace resort to self-help.”

On the Warsaw threat, Akpabio who spoke at the funeral mass of his grandmother-in-law, late Mercy Neife Igwenagu at the Christ the King Catholic Parish, Auguobu-Obua, Ezeagu Local Government Area of Enugu State held in August this year, is quoted to have said: “we can’t talk politics in the church but in 2019, Warsaw shall see war and war shall see Warsaw. The return will be victor. May God grant us all victory.”

They also described as worrisome that “in the face of all the crisis fuelled by senator Akpabio and his supporters the Presidency and all the relevant agencies have maintained an uncommon silence.”

Recalling how the former governor once cried foul over what turned out to be a phantom attack, the elders said: “After threatening to overrun the state, Senator Akpabio staged a desperate stunt on August 21, 2019 in his compound in Ukana. Surrounded by a detachment of heavily armed security operatives, the warrior lawmaker still raised the alarm about his home being invaded by hired assassins. While dispelling the stunt, the State Police Public Relations Officer (PRO) DSP Odiko Macdon, was quick to say “The force would like to state categorically that there was no attack on the person or residence of Senator Godswill Akpabio (CON) and no one was hurt in the neighbourhood. It was purely an armed robbery incident which was aborted by the timely intervention of the police. The commissioner of police has been in touch with the senator who unreservedly expressed satisfaction at the way the situation was handled by the Police.”
