The Assistant Inspector General of Police in charge of Zone 9, Umuahia, Tijani Baba, has asked policemen serving in the zone, which comprises Imo, Abia, Enugu and Anambra states, to adhere to the code of engagement guiding policemen in Nigeria.

The AIG, who spoke during a one-day official visit to Imo State Police Command on Monday, warned policemen to shun corruption in its entirety.

The police boss who scolded officers for fuelling crises in most cases they investigate, said that “some officers do not adhere to due process.”

According to him, a corrupt officer was a time bomb to the command even as he said any officer who was not thorough in any case was preparing their exit from the force.

He asked police officers to work with the Department of Public Prosecution in criminal matters.

The AIG said, “There is problem in adhering to due processes by some officers. There should be diligence in investigation processes. Some officers sign their exit warrant through their actions. Ensure you adhere to the merit of the laid-down procedure of the force.

“Make use of the DPP in investigation as it strengthens your investigation process. Any police officer without any interim report or diary of report is a bad officer; some policemen are outright criminals.

“We must improve the investigation strategies. The complainant will never turn to be a suspect. I must ensure due process. I will leave no stone unturned. You constitute most of the problems we have in police.”

He added, “If you are a corrupt officer, any case you are handling is corrupt. I have zero tolerance for corruption. Any officer caught will be dealt with.”
