Why They Are After Amaechi… By Oby Ndukwe

Only for those patient enough to read!

Those who sponsored the failed attack on Amaechi simply want to divide his constituency to further whittle down his political influence.

I hate to be emotional first before digging deeper. The underlying and undeniable truth is that the politics of 2023 is on already and many are going to be casualties even before the time.

A towering political influence with a major landmark judgment never heard or will be heard again in the anals of our politics and clutched with an intimidating profile as one of the best performing Ministers under President Muhammadu Buhari, Amaechi remains the envy of all eyes, rightly or wrongly. He can best be likened to Apostle Paul whom the people vowed not to eat or drink not until he is killed. (Acts 23:13)

The political power play is more of regional politics and no one can deny the fact that Amaechi hails from the Eastern region otherwise known also as the old Niger Delta region.

Having plotted his failure to take over the reins of power in his home state, Rivers in 2015 and 2019, Amaechi’s traducers are not resting on their oars to ensure that he is greatly distabilized in his immediate constituency, leaving him gasping for air.
While many have adduced different reasons for the attack in far away Spain while on National Assignment, I make bold to say that the unpatriotic, infantile and futile attempt on Amaechi’s life is sponsored by fifth columnists.

[A fifth column is any group of people who undermine a larger group from within, usually in favor of an enemy group or nation. The activities of a fifth column can be overt or clandestine. Forces gathered in secret can mobilize openly to assist an external attack]

The forces within and without the ruling APC drafted the IPOB group to unleash the onslaught and embarrass the Minister for Transportation and a Two time Speaker of Rivers State House of Assembly; a two time Governor of Rivers State; a two time Chairman of Nigeria’s Governors’ Forum and a two time Director General of Buhari/Osinbajo Campaign Organization. He led the “Commonsense Revolution” to oust an incumbent President, Goodluck Jonathan – the first in the history of Nigeria’s Democracy. Amaechi left an unparalleled record yet to be broken even as he ended the 16 year straight reign of PDP!
His legacies in Rivers State as Governor both in human and capital development is unrivaled and has pit him against those who ordinarily should applaud him but choose to deride him.

Now, towards the battle for succession especially at a time the Igbo areas of Nigeria are pressing for a taste of power in the 21st century, Amaechi amongst a few others stand out as the likely choice. Though from the Ikwerre Ethnic Nationality, Amaechi publicly declared that he is Igbo and history attests to that, albeit rightly or wrongly. His next political battle began the day he claimed to be Igbo under the Eastern Region, coupled with his enviable position in Buhari’s political family. He can best be described as the biblical “Joseph and the Coat of many Colours.”

The plot to attack him was only to create a platform for a war of word amongst his kinsmen in the region, thereby, polarizing and reducing the bloc support he ought to receive should he be drafted into the race for Presidency in 2023.

The different narratives, threats and counter threats amongst his people of the East gladdens the hearts of the conspirators while the largely ignorant but passionate supporters are losing sight of this underlying hard truth.

The two highly placed Government officials attacked by the proscribed IPOB have their roots in the Eastern Region- Ekweremadu and Amaechi who belong to PDP and APC respectively and are likely tipped by the two parties as strong contenders should the two Frontline political parties decide to opt for a zoning formula that will shift power to the Igbo(core and related) areas of the East.

It’s obvious that IPOB could be a willing tool in the hands of those who are strongly opposed to a President of Igbo extraction or they may have chosen to ‘kill’ their first eleven unknowingly.

Whatever be the case, Amaechi is a victim of his laudable goals in governance. He has been trending lately for the good reasons as he is poised to help Buhari leave a lasting legacy that will outlive him, particularly in the Modernized Railway Sector.

If Amaechi succeeds in his bid to start the construction of the Port Harcourt – Maiduguri railway and the Calabar- Lagos railway, then, he should be prepared for more of such sponsored attacks!
