On Monday the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has written the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), informing it of its decision to hold its zonal congresses on March 26, 2023.

The ruling party, however, kept mute on the national convention of the party scheduled to hold on February 26.

It was reported that the APC Governors will meet tonight to reach a compromise on the zoning of party positions and possibly pick a new date for the convention of the party.

But the party, in a letter with reference number APC/NHDQ/INEC/019/22/21 and addressed to the Chairman of INEC and jointly signed by the Chairman of the Caretaker/Extraordinary Convention Planning Committee (CECPC) , Mai Mala Buni and the Secretary, Senator John Akpanudoedehe, revealed that the zonal Congress will now hold instead of the convention.

The party leadership stressed that the notice supersedes its earlier notice for the National Convention referenced APC/NHDQ/INEC/019/22/14, saying its decision was predicated on the evaluation of the party’s constitution.

It stated: “In furtherance to Article 85 of the Electoral Act, 2010 (as amended) and compliance with Section 12:6 of our party constitution, we hereby write to notify the Commission that our great party, the All Progressives Congress (APC) has scheduled to hold its Zonal Congresses on Saturday 26th March 2022.

“Kindly arrange for your officials to monitor the exercise accordingly. While hoping to receive your cooperation, please accept the assurances of our highest esteem.”
