Why Abia State University lost accreditation for Medicine and Surgery – Health Commissioner, VC, CMD Opens up.
The Commissioner for health in Abia State Dr Joe Osuji has explained that the Abia State University Uturu lost accreditation for it’s Medicine and Surgery programme following the unavailability of staff when the accreditation team from the National Universities Commission (NUC) visited the facility.
The Commissioner stated this while appearing before the Abia State House of Assembly plenary on Wednesday 22nd June 2022 following the house summon to him, the Chief Medical Director of the Abia State University Teaching Hospital and the Vice Chancellor of the Abia State University.
When asked by the Speaker of the Abia State House of Assembly Rt Hon Chinedum Enyinnaya Orji over what led to the withdrawal of the accreditation for the College of Medicine, Abia State University ( ABSU ), by the National Universities Commission, NUC, the Commissioner responded by saying that when the Nigerian Universities Commission (NUC) team came on a supervision tour of the institution, after being conducted round the facility couldn’t get to the medical school, because the gate was under lock and key following the strike by the workers at the Abia State University Teaching Hospital Aba.
Dr Osuji commissioner said he wasn’t duly informed the day the team came on the visit, he further emphasised that the attitude of the workers in various General Hospitals in the state has made the hospitals to perform below expectations, he said the constituted Boards of the hospitals made it difficult for his ministry to access their financial activities which made the ministry of health not to be in the know of the revenue generated at the Hospital.
When asked to give his details over the loss of accreditation by his institution, the Vice Chancellor of Abia State University Uturu, Professor Onyebuchi Maxwell Ogbulu reiterated that the loss of accreditation was because the gate of the medical school was under lock and key when the team visited due to the strike action embarked upon by the workers even after two months salaries were released to them.
When the House asked the Chief Medical Director of Abia State University Teaching Hospital, Aba, Dr Offia Awa to speak over why the University lost accreditation of it’s Medicine and Surgery programme, he explained that the loss of accreditation was because the NUC team didn’t meet some medical staff on ground when they visited few months ago.
