On Tuesday Nigeria popular socio-political activist, Deji Adeyanju has backed the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, Governor, Godwin Emefiele over his insistence on the deadline for the new currency.

Adeyanju said politicians pushing for an extension of the deadline are interested in vote-buying.

In a chat with newsmen, Adeyanju wrote: “I stand with Godwin Emefiele on January 31st deadline of new currency. The politicians fighting this are just interested in vote buying.”

Adeyanju’s remark is coming after the Senate appealed to the apex bank to extend the mop-up of old naira notes to 31st July 2023.

The senate through an adopted resolution arrived at the new deadline after a thorough debate.

In December 2022, the CBN redesigned the N200, N500 and N1000 denominations and released the new notes into circulation.

Emefiele had announced January 31st, 2023 as the deadline for the old denominations.

Despite criticisms from Nigerians, the CBN governor had insisted that the January 31st deadline was sacrosanct.
