Media claims that Ola Olukoyede, the chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), allegedly stated that “seven out of ten Nigerian students are criminals” have been denied by the EFCC.

The anti-graft agency’s spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, announced the development in a statement on Thursday.

He disclosed that the EFCC Chairman, during a recent meeting with representatives of civil society organizations, had simply requested that young people be better educated by the media as a preventative measure against the dangers of internet fraud.

The future of their leadership of the nation may be in jeopardy, he continued, citing Olukoyede’s observation that seven out of ten Nigerian youths may be involved in cybercrimes if the trend of youth involvement in internet fraud is not addressed and reversed.

Oyewale said: “The attention of the Economic and Financial Crimes has been drawn to some needless misrepresentation of the concerns of the Executive Chairman of the EFCC, Mr Ola Olukoyede, to the rising incidences of internet-related crimes involving youths across the country.

“At no time did he say that “seven out of 10 Nigerian students are criminals.” His concerns still bother breaking the jinx of the mass indulgence of youths in cyber crimes.
