On Friday the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, said the union does not enjoy embarking on industrial actions despite issuing ultimatums.

Uchenna Ekwe, Head of NLC International Relations, stated that the union does not want to take continuous industrial action; rather, it wants the right thing done.

Remember that since October of last year, the National Labor Council (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) have given the Federal Government a 14-day ultimatum to fulfill the 16-point agreement with the workers.

Some Nigerians responded negatively to the ultimatum, criticizing the NLC for choosing to go on strike in the face of economic hardship.

In response, Ekwe stated that they only issue a demand when the government disregards the union’s admonitions.

“Usually people see when NLC starts putting warning and if you notice the comments, people will say we don’t want a strike, it will disrupt,” Ekwe remarked during an appearance on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief.

“Balancing all these, Let me make this clear, the NLC is actually never interested in a strike, we don’t want a strike; we want the right things to be done.

“Before you see us issue a public ultimatum, there must have been many communications that are not meant public to the government system calling their attention to probably an agreement like in this case.”
