Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s (LP) presidential candidate for 2023, has demanded a thorough examination of the 2024 budget.

On Monday, he revealed this in a statement posted on his official X Twitter.

Given the current state of the nation’s economy, Obi recommended that sufficient resources be allocated to vital sectors such as security, combating poverty and addressing the problems of hunger and food insecurity, and electricity supply.

He also bemoaned the recent surge in violent crimes and homicides that have been happening all throughout the nation, saying that Nigeria is now among the riskiest places in the world to live due to the rising crime rate.

“In the past 1 year, about 7000 Nigerians have been kidnapped, with about 700 kidnapped in the last 3 weeks, notwithstanding the violent crimes and killings that occur in every part of the nation, which must have included us in one of the world’s riskiest countries to live in,” he wrote.

The former governor of Anambra also voiced worries about the nation’s unstable power supply and exorbitant food prices.

“We have become one of the hungriest nations in the world and one of the most difficult nations in the world to live in, with food prices constantly going out of the reach of most Nigerians.

“Power supply is abysmally poor and Nigerians are now mostly in total darkness, as over 60% are without power supply.

“Even those in perceived privileged areas now go for days without power supply”, he wrote.

But he pleaded with the legislative and executive branches to take into account the numerous difficulties the country faces and reallocate funds to these crucial sectors.
