The Labour Party (LP) faction led by Julius Abure has declared that all party tickets for the 2027 general elections are now open to all qualified Nigerians. This decision, made during a National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting in Abuja, reverses the prior stance of reserving the presidential and governorship slots for Peter Obi and Alex Otti.
A communiqué from the meeting stated, “NEC in session reviewed the decision of the National Convention to reserve its Presidential and Governorship tickets for Peter Gregory Obi and Alex Otti respectively… all tickets of the party from Presidency to the House of Assemblies are open to all qualified Nigerians.”
The Abure faction also rejected a recent stakeholders’ meeting called by Abia State Governor Alex Otti, which appointed a caretaker committee led by Nenadi Usman. The NEC asserted that Otti lacked the constitutional authority to convene such a meeting, further criticizing the legality of the process.
The faction’s communiqué emphasized, “The Governor of Abia State… does not have the power to call his Ward Executive meeting without the approval of his Ward Chairman. The meeting contravenes Section 82 of the Electoral Act 2022.”
The caretaker committee led by Nenadi Usman was formed after a meeting attended by Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, and his running mate, Datti Baba-Ahmed.
