In response to the 82-day power outage at the University College Hospital, UCH, Ibadan, hundreds of students from the University of Ibadan in Oyo State have peacefully protested.

According to reports, UI medical students receive their training at UCH, which serves as a teaching hospital.

Due to debts owed to the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company, or IBEDC, our correspondent discovered that UCH has been without power for the past 12 months.

In March 2024, IBEDC shut off the hospital’s electricity supply since the electricity bills were not paid.

In November 2023, the hospital’s power supply was cut off by the electricity distribution company for the same reason.

Our correspondent learned that the power supply has still not been restored.

Students from the University of Ibadan staged a peaceful protest early Wednesday morning to express their dissatisfaction with the situation at the hospital.

Our correspondent, who is monitoring the procession, reports that the students were led by the President of the Students’ Union, SU, Bolaji Aweda.

Aweda, speaking with newsmen, stated that students of the institution have been directly affected.

“We are protesting against what is happening. And, of course, our students are affected.

“For 82 days, there has been no light at UCH, and this is due to the inability of UCH to pay its electricity bill to IBEDC.

“IBEDC has demanded that UCH settle its debt before they will restore power,” he said.
