Port Harcourt, March 9, 2024– The wave of resignations at the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) continues as Ibierembo Evelyn Thompson, the Commissioner in charge of Transport, Logistics, and Stores, has formally stepped down from her position.
In her resignation letter addressed to the Chairman of RSIEC, Thompson cited the recent Supreme Court judgment that nullified the October 5, 2024, Local Government Council election in Rivers State as the reason for her decision.
“I remain deeply grateful for the opportunity to serve, as well as the valuable experiences and insights gained during my tenure. I wish the Commission the very best,” she wrote in her letter.
Her resignation follows similar moves by other RSIEC commissioners in recent days, signaling increasing uncertainty within the electoral body. The letter was also copied to the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Rivers State.
Observers believe the series of resignations may further impact the operations of RSIEC as the state navigates the aftermath of the Supreme Court ruling.
