In order to adequately inform the parliamentarians about the state’s developments, Sole Administrator Ibok-Ete Ibas has asked the House of Representatives Ad hoc Committee on Rivers State for additional time.
During a Friday meeting with the committee in Abuja, Ibas made the proposal. He had previously missed his appearances on April 17 and 24 before the committee.
He apologized for not accepting earlier invites from the committee.
We reported that on Friday, Ibas met with members of the ad hoc committee on Rivers State behind closed doors.
In an attempt to assume legislative responsibilities in Rivers State, the committee convened the meeting.
Governor Sim Fubara and his deputy, as well as the legislature, were suspended when Rivers State declared a state of emergency.
Ibas stated during the committee meeting: “I have always had the utmost respect for the National Assembly. I understand the significance of your supervision duties and your curiosity about the developments in Rivers, which is currently peaceful but yet under danger.
“I remain fully committed to cooperating with the committee and to ensuring that all relevant information is made available in due course to support your important work.
“I only request the understanding and the indulgence of this committee to grant me additional time to adequately prepare and present a comprehensive and constructive briefing, given the complexities and sensitivities surrounding the current transitional period in Rivers.
“It is important that any engagement with this committee is done with the depth, accuracy, and clarity it rightfully deserves.
“I remain fully committed to cooperating with the committee and to ensuring that all relevant information is made available in due course to support your important work.”
