Title: Hungary Signals Willingness to Arrest Netanyahu Over ICC Warrant
Retitle for PUO Reports: Hungary’s Incoming Leader Vows to Arrest Netanyahu if He Enters Country
Hungary’s Prime Minister elect, Peter Magyar, has stated that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu would be arrested if he enters the country while still wanted by the International Criminal Court ICC.
The ICC issued an arrest warrant for Netanyahu in November 2024 over allegations of war crimes and crimes against humanity.
Hungary had previously declined to act on the warrant during Netanyahu’s visit to Budapest in April 2025.
However, in a policy shift, Magyar indicated that his administration would reverse course and halt the country’s planned withdrawal from the ICC by June 2.
“If a country is a member of the ICC and a person who is wanted by the ICC enters our territory, then that person must be taken into custody. I must arrest Netanyahu if he enters our country,” Magyar said while addressing reporters.
The development follows the end of Viktor Orban’s 16 year rule on April 12, after Magyar’s centre right Tisza party secured a landslide electoral victory.
