In what appears to be a major endorsement of Governor Alex Otti’s leadership style and political influence, former Deputy Governor of Abia State, Rt. Hon. Ude Oko Chukwu, has declared that the successful conduct of the 2026 Elective National Convention of the Labour Party stands as clear evidence that the governor is “a great leader of our time.”
Speaking against the backdrop of months of internal crisis that rocked the Labour Party at the national level, Ude Oko Chukwu noted that the peaceful and successful convention marks a defining moment in the party’s history, one he attributes largely to the resilience and strategic leadership of Governor Otti.
According to the former deputy governor, while many political actors would have abandoned the party during its turbulent phase, Governor Otti remained steadfast, demonstrating uncommon loyalty and commitment to the party’s ideals.
Ude Oko Chukwu emphasized that Governor Otti’s decision to remain in the Labour Party during its most challenging period speaks volumes about his leadership depth.
“At a time when the party was going through serious internal challenges, Governor Otti stayed put. He did not waver, he did not abandon the ship. Instead, he provided leadership and direction that has now repositioned the party for growth and stability,” he stated.
He described the successful national convention as a product of deliberate leadership, strategic patience, and a clear vision for the future of the party. He also described the 2026 convention as a critical turning point, marking the end of prolonged leadership disputes and signaling a new phase of unity within the party.
Ude Oko Chukwu maintained that the ability of the party to successfully organize such a convention reflects internal stability and renewed confidence among stakeholders.
“This is not just about a convention; it is about restoring confidence in the party. It shows that the Labour Party is back on track and ready to play a major role in Nigeria’s political future,” he added.
Beyond party politics, the former deputy governor also commended Governor Otti’s performance in Abia State, highlighting what he described as visible infrastructural development and tangible dividends of democracy across the state.
He noted that while many leaders focus solely on projects, Governor Otti’s strength lies in his consistency, clarity of purpose, and disciplined approach to governance.
“Another remarkable thing about Governor Otti is his consistency. He is focused, clear in his decisions, and committed to delivering results. These are qualities that define great leadership,” he said.
Ude Oko Chukwu, who is also an aspirant for the Abia North Senatorial seat under the Labour Party, used the opportunity to reaffirm his support for the governor, pledging to work closely with him to sustain the current momentum.
He stressed that continuity of leadership built on performance and credibility is essential for long-term development, adding that the governor’s achievements must be protected and consolidated.
Analysts believe that statements like this from key political stakeholders could further strengthen Governor Otti’s influence within the party and beyond, while also boosting the Labour Party’s confidence as it prepares for future electoral contests.
As the Labour Party navigates its post-convention phase, many observers say the focus will now shift to consolidating internal unity, expanding its grassroots reach, and building on the leadership momentum credited to Governor Otti.
