Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, has highlighted major achievements recorded by his administration over the past three years, declaring that the government has restored public trust, improved infrastructure, strengthened social justice, and repositioned governance in the state.

Governor Otti made the remarks during the May edition of “Governor Alex Otti Speaks to Abians,” held at the Michael Okpara Auditorium, Umuahia, as activities marking the third anniversary of his administration commenced.

Describing the anniversary as an opportunity for reflection, the Governor said his administration’s most significant achievement has been restoring the confidence of Abians in governance through impactful leadership, fiscal discipline, infrastructure renewal, and human capital development.

According to him, the administration has rebuilt the pride of Abians both at home and in the diaspora by delivering governance anchored on accountability, responsiveness, and public trust.

Without fear of contradiction, the Governor stated that his government has brought peace to previously troubled areas such as Umunneochi, where insecurity had once disrupted normal life.

He noted that workers and pensioners now receive their salaries and pensions consistently by the 28th of every month, describing prompt payment as part of the administration’s commitment to justice and dignity for workers.

Governor Otti disclosed that the state’s debt profile has significantly reduced from N191 billion to N50 billion as of the end of 2025, while Abia’s ranking in transparency and accountability reportedly improved from 17th position to 4th nationally.

On infrastructure, the Governor revealed that his administration has completed 864.12 kilometers of roads, while 82 additional roads covering 212 kilometers remain under construction, alongside sustained street lighting expansion and road maintenance initiatives.

In the health sector, Governor Otti said the government has recruited 821 health professionals, with 771 already in active service, while over 193,000 residents have enrolled in the state’s health insurance scheme.

He added that 277 healthcare facilities have either been retrofitted or are undergoing rehabilitation, including general hospitals in Obingwa, Arochukwu, Ikwuano, Ohafia, and Umunneato, as well as cottage hospitals in Abayi and Umuihe.

Speaking on education, the Governor said the implementation of free and compulsory basic education has led to the enrollment of over 300,000 pupils, while over 5,000 teachers have been recruited to strengthen the sector.

He further disclosed that two smart schools are ready for commissioning, while tertiary institutions including Abia State University, Ogbonnaya Onu Polytechnic, and the Abia State College of Health have recorded major improvements, including restored accreditations and hostel expansion.

In land administration, Governor Otti said over 4,047 Certificates of Occupancy have been signed, surpassing the combined total recorded between 1999 and 2023, while land documentation has been digitized to improve transparency and combat fraud.

The Governor also highlighted major progress in waste management, stating that the Abia State Environmental Protection Agency evacuates over 13 tons of waste weekly while creating more than 2,000 jobs.

On transportation, he said the state’s electric bus initiative has transported over 386,000 passengers, with an additional 20 electric buses expected by July and 30 more subsequently.

Governor Otti also announced that the Umuahia Transport Terminal will be commissioned on May 27, while the Aba terminal is nearing completion.

In the power sector, the Governor confirmed that the state has finalized an agreement to acquire electricity distribution assets in Umuahia, Bende, Ohafia, and Umunneochi from EEDC, with payment arrangements underway.

He added that over 50 transformers have been distributed across communities, while the Abia State Electricity Regulatory Agency has been established to strengthen energy governance.

The Governor also disclosed that the state is in the final stages of privatizing legacy industrial assets, including Afro Beverages and Star Paper Mill, to stimulate economic activity and job creation.

On technology and innovation, Governor Otti said his administration is investing in digital skills training and expanding broadband infrastructure, with plans to achieve statewide 5G connectivity.

Reaffirming his administration’s commitment to governance, development, and public welfare, Governor Otti assured Abians that his government remains focused on improving quality of life while maintaining security and democratic participation across the state.
